Working in the Antepartum Unit was an amazing experience. It was so endearing and humbling working with such strong woman. These are woman having "at risk" pregnancies and it was the first time I ever had to work on my sensitivity skills as a young pre-medical student. My role was to actually go into their rooms and keep them company and offer a simple hand massage. Even though these two tasks were simple it truly made a difference. I received thank you cards and they got to get to know me as a person. I was afforded this opportunity as a volunteer. I was the first person to begin this new initiative. I valued this experience because it truly showed me that people depend on you. Some people are hanging on by a string of hope and I was able to give them just a little bit more hope by being their for them. It developed my sensitivity. Being that I want to serve a community that is underserved it is imperative that you have an abundance of sensitivity.

Research of Neurofibromatosis
My time at Cincinnati Children's Hospital doing research spanned over one semester. Although the time was short I was doing valuable work. This being my first research experience my job was to shadow the PI and assist with anything to help the lab run better. My job spanned from blood centrifuging to pipetting. The reason why this experience is so significant to me is because this research on Neurofibromatosis . Cancer research is so detrimental to our societies livelihood because its something that is systematically taking so many lives . I want to do something about the health problems that posses us. This research is so important to me because it references my major. Its truly gives me perspective in another area of Neuroscience. My goal-even though it may see far fetched-was to eliminated the mutation of the NF1 gene. This being my first time doing research it developed a baseline for me in research later on in life and the skills to achieve goals related to research.
